SUBCLASS 500 (STUDENT VISA)

mapIf you are coming to Australia to study a course more than 3 months, it could be Independent EliCos, VET, Higher Education or Postgraduate Research you need to Apply for Student Visa under Subclass 500. As per the norms of Student Visa of Australia student can study in Australia for up to 5 years with student visa. And in order to become eligible for Student Visa you should be registered in full time course lasting duration of 18 months or more.

Visa Eligibility requirements

The student visa you need depends on your course. Here are some typical requirements:

  • Receive an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE) certificate for each course (if applying for more than one)
  • Meet the Genuine Temporary Entrant Requirement
  • Prove you have sufficient funds for airfares, course fees and living costs
  • Demonstrate English language proficiency
  • Meet health and character requirements
  • Provide evidence of Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
  • Prove you have a welfare arrangement, if you are under 18

Documents Required

Essential documents required for Australian study visa for Indian Students are as follows

After securing your Australian Study visa, you need to abide with some of the conditions while you are in Australia including,

  • You cannot work more than 40 hours per fortnight while your course is in session and can only start working once your course has commenced.

Can I work while I study?
Yes as an international student, you are allowed to work in Australia for at least 40 hours for every 2 week. While at the time of your vacation, you can work full time.
What is ELICOS? When do I need it?
ELICOS stands for English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Language. And you are required to take ELICOS if you are not meeting English language proficiency requirements of your chosen course. The duration of ELICOS generally last between 5 to 10 weeks. And the fees of ELICOS is between AUD 280-400 per week depending upon the institute.
How much funds should I require to show for Australia Study visa?
You need to show 1 year tuition fees + 1 year living expenses (AUD 20,250) and additional AUD 2000 as your miscellaneous expenses as a main applicant for Australia Study visa. And it should be 3 months old.
What is COE?
The Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) is an official document issued to international students by colleges or universities in Australia. It confirms your acceptance in a course, and also states that you have paid your tuition fees and Overseas Student Health Cover premium (OSHC)
What is OSHC? Why do I need that?
OSHC stands for Overseas Student Health Cover. It is sort of health insurance which every international student undertaking studies in Australia and their dependent requires to obtain it before their visa file lodgement. It includes cover for visits to the doctor, some hospital treatment, ambulance cover and limited pharmaceuticals (medicines).
Can I apply with my spouse for Australia? If yes, should I need to show any extra funds for it?
Yes, your spouse can apply along with you if you are applying for Master degree course in Australia. And your spouse should need to show additional funds for his one year living cost that is AUD 7100 and AUD 2000 as miscellaneous expenses.
Can I work during EliCos?
No, you cannot work during EliCos. And you can only start working part-time when you start your main program in Australia.
Am I eligible for Post Graduate Work visa, if I complete VET program from Australia?
Yes, you may be eligible for Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) of 18 months duration only if you have completed course which is 18 months in duration and your occupation comes under Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). For proper details, seek our expert's advice.
Can I change my level of studies in Australia?
Australia always recommend to maintain level of your studies if you are in Australia on study permit. So, you can only change the course if you are planning to select higher level of course. And for this, you also need to apply for new student visa.
What about my tuition deposit? If my student visa get refused?
There is no need to worry about your Tuition deposit if your STUDY VISA get refused as you can apply for their refunds by contacting your College or University at which you have applied. And the payment get refunded in about 6-8 weeks.
Can I work after Graduation in Australia?
After completing your studies in Australia, you can apply for Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) and can stay and work in Australia from between 18 months to 4 years depending upon your qualification and location or city of Australia you have completed your education from.
